US Open 2009 Men’s Singles Final: Roger Federer vs Juan Martin del Potro
US OPEN
Venue: Flushing Meadows, New York
Date: 14 September 2009,
Roger Federer has won all six matches (6-0) against Juan Martin del Potro, including three straight sets wins over the Argentine on a hard-court.
Five-time defending champion Federer is appearing in his sixth successive US Open final. He is bidding to become the first man since Bill Tilden in 1925 to collect a sixth successive US title, and just the fourth man in history to win six successive titles at the same Grand Slam championship.
Roger Federer about del Potro: “He is hitting his serves better, from the baseline he is getting more confident. He knows much more now what he needs to do on the court.”
“Del Potro had a great match today against Rafa, because Rafa doesn’t give you any easy matches,” said Federer, shooting for his 16th grand slam win. “So for him to come through the way he did, it’s, to say the least, impressive.
“That’s why he’s not to be underestimated.”
“I’m very happy to beat Rafa in straight sets, played an unbelievable match,” said Del Potro, who admitted the Open is his favourite tournament. “Of course it’s great for me and for my future being in finals. “I’m very close to do it. I’ve always dreamed of this moment.”
